Pregnancy
At Glen Eira Physiotherapy, our physios provide thorough and tailored Pregnancy Pilates programs.
Our physiotherapists have a special interest and many years of experience in treating common musculoskeletal pregnancy complaints as well as designing safe Pilates programs and classes for pregnancy.
Pregnancy Pilates offers the perfect approach to enhance your core strength and prepare your body for childbirth. Our Pilates programs and classes are customised individually. We support small group pilates and restrict the groups to 4 people.

Advantages of Pregnancy Pilates
Exercise during pregnancy delivers many health benefits including improved weight control, elevated mood, and better fitness. It might also decrease the risk of pregnancy-related complications like hypertension and pre-eclampsia.
As your baby grows, the stress on your back escalates. According to the Australian Physiotherapy Association, 50% of women will suffer from low back pain throughout their pregnancy. Physiolates exercises can strengthen your abdominal muscles, helping to reduce the risk of back pain or pelvic girdle pain.
Another usual complaint in pregnancy is bladder leakage. As you move through your trimesters, your pelvic floor can also weaken. Our team at Physiolates can refer you to a continence physiotherapist for support. The APA indicates “up to 67 per cent of women will leak urine (incontinence) when they laugh, sneeze, cough or exercise during pregnancy but those with stronger pelvic floor muscles are less likely to leak during pregnancy and after the baby is born.” (Australian Physiotherapy Association)

Pregnancy Physiotherapy Mckinnon
Glen Eira Physiotherapy features several physios with a keen interest in treating musculoskeletal pain related to pregnancy. Common conditions treated by our physios include:
Sacro-iliac joint pain
Discomfort in one or both buttocks accompanied by low back pain.
Low back pain
Commonly resulting from a posture change due to the growing foetus.
Pubic symphysis pain
Pain in the pubic region, typically worsened by standing on one leg or excessive separation of legs.
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Wrist pain, pins and needles, and hand numbness, more severe at night.
Rib pain
Resulting from the rib cage expanding to make room for the baby.
Diastasis Rectus Abdominis
This usually shows as a vertical bulge down the stomach, indicating the separation of the tummy muscle due to pregnancy. Early detection is essential. If you observe it during pregnancy, getting the right advice and doing specific exercises is important. Do not start a gym program without advice.
Thoracic pain
Pain around the bra strap area often begins during pregnancy and can be made worse after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
